Tech Tip – iOS 12 Multitasking

Tired of flipping back and forth through apps as you try to take notes?  Wish you could use two apps at the same time?  With iOS 12 you can….and multitasking has never been easier!

There are multiple options when it comes to multitasking on the iPad – Slide Over, Split View, Picture-in-Picture, and Drag and Drop between apps. Click here for additional information and examples of these gestures.

  • Slide Over – work on an app that slides in front of an open app, or two open apps that are in split view.
    • Open an app.
    • Swipe up slowly from the bottom of the screen to open the Dock.
    • On the Dock, touch and hold the second app you want to use, then drag it to the screen.
    • To move the second open app window hovering over the front of the first app, touch and hold the dash icon, then drag it to the left or right side of the screen.
  • Split View – use two apps at the same time…perfect for taking notes while reading a book or web page!  Watch a video while taking notes!
    • Open an app.
    • Swipe up slowly from the bottom of the screen to open the Dock.
    • On the Dock, touch and hold the second app you want to use, then drag it to the screen.
    • When the second app opens in Slide Over, drag the dash icon down.
    • To adjust the app windows in Split View –
      • Give both apps equal screen space – drag the app divider to the center of the screen.
      • Turn a Split View into a Slide Over – swipe down from the top of the app.
      • Close Split View – drag the app divider over the app that you want to close.
  • Picture-in-Picture allows you to multitask while watching a video or using FaceTime.  Tap the Picture in Picture icon and the video screen scales down to a corner of your display. You can then open a second app and the video will continue to play.  You can drag the video window to another corner if you need to move it. To return the video to full screen, tap the full screen icon on the left corner of the video.
  • Drag and Drop between apps – drag text from a web page in Safari into a note on Notability, move an image from Photos into an email or document…so many possibilities!
    • Open the two apps you want to use in Split View or Slide Over.
    • Touch and hold the item (photo, document) you want to drop until it lifts up.  To drag and drop text, select the text first, then touch and hold the text until it lifts up.
    • Drag the item to the other app and drop it.
